Rooibos tea originates from southern Africa, where the indigenous population used the wild-growing shrub to prepare fruity, naturally sweet infusions long before the arrival of Europeans. As exports increased during the 19th century, the plant began to be cultivated commercially.
During production, the twigs are chopped, fermented and then dried in the sun. High-quality rooibos is distinguished by its ruby-red colour, long needle-like leaves and smooth, mildly sweet, characteristically aromatic flavour.
Unlike tea made from the tea plant, rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and contains only a small amount of tannins.
